How does Afterglow know what each institution requires?
We maintain a team of AI research agents that investigate each institution's notification process — analyzing their policies, accepted submission methods, and required documents using only publicly available information. Every research result is reviewed and approved by a human before it goes live.
Does my personal information ever get sent to an AI?
No. AI is used only to research institutions and to draft letter templates with placeholder values — things like "[Deceased Name]" or "[Date of Death]". Your actual personal information is substituted into those templates on our own servers and is never transmitted to any AI provider. When we submit on your behalf, we use traditional automation tools, not AI.
What are the different levels of service?
Manual
We generate a personalized, ready-to-print letter addressed to the institution. You print it, sign it, and mail it yourself. This applies to institutions that require an original signature or only accept submissions directly from the account holder.
We prep, you sign
We prepare the full submission package — letter, supporting documents, and mailing. You review and sign electronically (via DocuSign), and we send everything by certified mail on your behalf. This covers institutions that accept third-party submissions but require a wet or notarized signature.
Fully automated
We handle the entire submission for you — online form, mail, or both — with no action required on your part after the case is started. This applies to institutions whose process can be completed programmatically without a signature.
Is Afterglow really free?
Yes. We're in an early launch period and the service is completely free while we grow our institution database. Cases submitted now help us improve coverage for everyone. If pricing is introduced in the future, existing users will always receive advance notice.
